Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum Black History Month Poster Competition 2023 Project

In collaboration with the aforementioned organization, the Lyceum hosts a competition every year for students to create a poster surrounding Black History Month and the theme the Lyceum chooses. For 2023, the theme was "Black Contributions in American Life and History," as referenced in the poster. The design focuses on contributions in music, specifically a favored genre of mine, jazz. A local Huntingtonian artist, "Diamond Teeth" Mary is represented, as the Lyceum is based in Huntington. Pairing her alongside the art deco design in the background created a decadent ornamentation surrounding her, uplifting the idea of Black excellence. It also creates an interesting dialogue between high art and low art. The art deco was chosen as a motif due to New Yorks's ties to many famed jazz and blues artists and was a strong graphic pattern that would lend itself well to the overall composition of the poster.

This poster was the recipient of the Merit Award (a conditional award only given when deemed necessary for another winner) and displayed across campus and affiliated organizations with the Lyceum.
